Every community carries a theology — a way of talking about God, suffering, survival, and hope that is embedded in its language, stories, and everyday speech. This outcome invites urban ministry leaders to take that reality seriously. Vernacular Theology: Sacred Speech in the City explores how street speech, Womanist thought, oral tradition, and the living wisdom of urban communities function as legitimate and powerful vessels for divine truth. Students examine the power dynamics embedded in “professionalized” theological language, trace the sacred roots of Black, Brown, and working-class vernaculars in religious spaces, and develop ministry tools that authentically honor the voices of the communities they serve. This is not a OLE about translating theology “down” to the people — it is a OLE about recognizing that the people have always already been doing theology.
